The Society of S by: Susan Hubbard

I've been reading this book for a few days now. It's not a usual title for me to read, in a way. Although it's completely like a book I would read. It's about vampires! But it's narrated by a 13-year-old girl, Ariella, who has lived a sheltered life, home schooled by her hunk of a vampire father, Raphael. She learned from her father that he is a vampire, that her future is yet unknown because she gets to decide to be a vampire or not, which is still unresolved. She also learns that her mother, who left her almost immediately after childbirth, tricked her father into getting pregnant. Ari decides to go on a road trip to find her mother. She does after stopping for what seems like a few months although it's not entirely made clear. She does find her mother. That's where I'm at now. It seems after hearing her mother's version of the story that Malcolm, her dad's friend from college, is to blame for the family breakup. I'm thinking the family will reunite and bring Mr. Malcolm down.

The author has a cunning way of dragging this story out. I blame it on the character Ari. She isn't in a hurry. She's just trailing around coming to senses with her life. I prefer faster paced novels, I guess.

Looking forward to seeing just how it does end. I'll update when I compete it.

UPDATED 02/08/08:
I finished this last night. It didn't end the way I thought it would. The parents didn't get back together but they all ended up being happy. Ari is living with her mother and Harris the monkey. I was hoping they would be a happy family again. Good book though.
