True Blood Season 2 Preview Pics!

HBO's True Blood is set to come back with season two starting June 14th. That is pretty far away but I'm looking forward to it. It's based off of the best selling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. Season 1 was decent and I'm hoping season 2 won't disappoint. Especially when HBO costs us $15 a month! Geesh!

Contest: New Author Bree Despain

Thanks to Erika Lynn of Kiss My Book for this info!

Bree Despain is a member of the blog 2010: A Book Odyssey, a blog for authors who will be debuting in 2010. Go to her blog where there is a super cool contest for some really cool prizes which you need to enter. The only catch: you have to tell her I sent you!

Her book The Dark Divine will be out in 2010. Here is a summary from the 2010 blog.
Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared--the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in blood--but the monstrous secret of what really transpired resurfaces when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude's small Christian high school.

Despite promising Jude she'll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel's shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry, glint in his eyes. The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, and the lives of her enitre family, as her actions stir the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind Daniel and Jude's dark secret, and the way to save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it--her soul.
So go enter and tell her I sent you!

In My Mailbox!

I got one book this week. It was one that I won on a blog and one that I've already read! I have the ARC of this book and loved it. Not sure if I'll keep it or give it away. You can read my review of it here.
http://thebooksmugglers.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/desire-unchained-187x300.jpg

Purchased this book from Target on Saturday night. I love the cover! I didn't realize it is three books, should've since it's sooo huge! I'm really interested in reading it. It includes:
Kissed by an Angel by Elizabeth Chandler
The Power of Love
Soulmates

It's 704 pages.
http://www.simonandschuster.net/assets/isbn/1416978836/C_1416978836.jpg

A love beyond life...a danger beyond doubt.

When her boyfriend, Tristan, died, Ivy thought she'd lost everything, even her faith in angels. But now she's discovered that he's her guardian angel -- his presence so strong that she can feel the touch of his hand, the beat of his heart. Ivy needs Tristan now more than ever because he knows she's in terrible danger. Only Ivy's guardian angel can save her now that his killer is after her.

But if Tristan rescues Ivy, his mission on earth will be finished, and he must leave her behind forever. Will saving Ivy mean losing her just when he's finally reached her again?

What did you get? I wish I got more ARCs but I'm cool with what I can get! I'd need more time to read if I received too many at a time.

My Tattoo!

Wow. What a night!
Last night I got my first tattoo and it will be one I never forget.

The artist, Jim, started my tattoo. About 5 minutes in he asked if someone was burning incense. The other dude there said yeah it was possible, they did it often.

20 minutes or so into the tattoo, one flower and tree leaf cluster complete, smoke starts billowing into the upstairs hallway and someone yells from downstairs, "Fire! Get out now!".

Jim puts down the "pen", I grab my stuff and we proceed to evacuate out the front. Smoke is seeping through the basement windows around the sides of the house. This is in Gettysburg, downtown, an old duplex building.

We go around back to get a look-see at the fire. It's coming from the back porch, which is also the entrance to the basement. It's wooden, with a door, and on fire!! One of the other artists was able to put out the majority of the flame with a few jugs of water before the first voluteer fireman arrived shouting, "Where's the fire!?", in his very hick, fire obsessed voice. It was so obnxious, not for him I'm sure, that I wanted to laugh so bad, but I held it in.

Click the pictures for a closer look!

Then the whole fire squad, ambulance squad, reporters, and police men arrived closing off the entire block. The response was insane and they were there before the girl who called 9-1-1 was even off the phone with them! I think this had to do with the ADT fire alarm system they had installed in the building.

We crowded on the front sidewalk until they gave us the all clear to re-enter the building. The fire was contained on just the back porch and the smoke was removed using an awesome, huge fan they blew into the building.

The firemen left deflated looking because there wasn't any "real" fire to put out. At least one guy had fun axing the hell out of the porch. They couldn't get their chain saw to work. :(

We returned to our now freezing room to continue my tattoo. Which I am completely satisfied with. Jim did great. The pain was minimal and pretty much tickled and gave me continious goose bumps.

Here's my Celtic Tree of Life:

It's on my right, inner forearm. My elbow crease is at the bottom of the above pic. I wanted it position so that it was right side up to me, not others looking at it. It's mine and I want to see it correctly!
What do you think?

P.S. My artist was Jimbo of Chrome Gardens. Here's their blog post about the incident!

Originality: 19!
Characters: 20!
Writing: 19!
Setting: 10!
Plot: 19!
Passion: 10!
Grade: 97/100!

NEW! Cover Bonus Points: 2/5!
99/100!

Inside flap description:

The vampire in me was closer to the surface . . .
Evernight Academy: an exclusive boarding school for the most beautiful, dangerous students of all—vampires. Bianca, born to two vampires, has always been told her destiny is to become one of them.
But Bianca fell in love with Lucas—a vampire hunter sworn to destroy her kind. They were torn apart when his true identity was revealed, forcing him to flee the school.
Although they may be separated, Bianca and Lucas will not give each other up. She will risk anything for the chance to see him again, even if it means coming face-to-face with the vampire hunters of Black Cross—or deceiving the powerful vampires of Evernight. Bianca's secrets will force her to live a life of lies.
Yet Bianca isn't the only one keeping secrets. When Evernight is attacked by an evil force that seems to target her, she discovers the truth she thought she knew is only the beginning. . . .
Read an excerpt HERE!

Originality:
The plot was very original in this book. Ghosts, vampires, humans, teens, adults, extremely old vampire teens. It has it all. Everything worked well together in this recent installment by Claudia Gray.

Characters:

Bianca and Lucas's love holds strong even thought they are forced apart. We learn more about Bianca, her parents, and her roommate Raquel. We also learn a bit more about snob Courtney. And a major character this time around is one of my favorite characters: Balthazar. We also meet his sister in this book, who turns out to be a major character.

Writing:
Claudia did such a better job on the writing this time around! I remember reading Evernight feeling confused and a bit ahead of where the reader should have been or something like that. Not with this book. I felt right at home. Everything matched and met up at the correct times. There was no confusion about the storyline, the characters, or even where it was all leading to. It was very well done.

Setting:

Well, the setting is Evernight Academy. A giant stone building with towers and gargoyles. The setting is setup very well. A lot takes place within Evernight and the details needed to convey the setting were there, not aggressive but not lacking either. We got to travel a bit in this book and each new setting was welcome and presented just great.

Plot:

This book was chock full o' badassness! There was lots of action, lots of planning, lots of collaboration between characters. Overall, I had tons of fun reading this. Everything worked out in the end with little-to-no loose ends, well except for the ending, but that's to be expected!

Passion:
Wow. The passion is totally there. Between Lucas and Bianca and even Bianca and Balty. Lucas and Bianca have a very close scene that they both ended up confused by what the other wants and it ends terribly, terribly bad. I wanted to cry and beat someone up. I felt totally sad for Bianca but I also understood where Lucas was coming from. And what makes it even worse is that Balthazar is such a nice guy, vampire, whatever, and he and Bianca would work great together. They share a moment that was so hot it was freezing....for a moment I thought I was reading one of my adult romances.

Cover:
The cover isn't that great. They stayed true with the artwork of the first book with a contrasted pic of a girl but I don't get it. I do love the font that Stargazer is set in though. And the purple is cool too.

Overall:
This was a great book. I totally loved it and I was soo sad with the end. Because I didn't want it to end. Here's the closing line:
"Yeah." I looked at Lucas as I took his hand in mine. "I'm with you."

So, needless to say, I WANT MORE!

The next book titled Hourglass will probably be a whole year away.

There are some cool wallpapers and avatars on Claudia's website!

Stay tuned for my contest of a BRAND NEW copy of Stargazer! I'll be posting it sometime later this week!

My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent Teaser!

Rachel Vincent is by far one of my most favorite authors. She has a terrific Shifter series that I just love.

She's taking a journey and venturing into YA. Her upcoming release, August 1, of My Soul to Take, Soul Screamers series, is about a teenage bean sidhe (banshee). Here's what Rachel summarized about the main character Kaylee Cavanaugh:

Kaylee Cavanaugh is a high school junior who thinks she’s losing her mind when she’s struck by the grim certainty that someone near her is going to die–and by the irresistible urge to shriek in response. But when it turns out that she’s not crazy and people are dying, Kaylee becomes determined to stop the deaths she foresees. Especially when they begin to hit close to home…

And here's the excerpt she has teased us with:
Nervous sweat gathered on my palms, and for once I was glad I couldn’t talk. I swallowed, my throat clenching around the scream scalding me from the inside. The gray haze was darker now, though no thicker. I could see through it easily, yet it tainted everything my terrified gaze landed on, as if the entire gym had been draped in a translucent cloud of smog. And still things moved on the edge of my vision, drawing my eye in first one direction, then another. I would have given anything to be able to speak in that moment, not just to warn Emma - because that was evidently a moot point- but to ask Nash what the hell was going on. Could he see what I saw? More important, could they see us?

Rachel's post is available at Deadline Dames. Visit Rachel's blog and web site too!

I've read 3 of Rachel's Shifter books. You can read my reviews for Stray (Werecats, Book 1), and Rogue (Werecats, Book 2), and Pride (Werecats, Book 3). Book 4, Prey, is due out July 1, and I SOOO can't wait!

My Soul to Take is available for pre-order at Amazon.com.

What do you think? A possible YA read for you? I'm totally on board. I told Rachel I would read anything she wrote. Bring it on Rachel!

Review & Contest: Evermore by Alyson Noël

Evermore (The Immortals) by Alyson Noël
St. Martin's Griffin
301 pages
February 3, 2009

Originality: 18!
Characters: 15
Writing: 17
Setting: 8
Plot: 16
Passion: 8
Grade: 82/100!

Here's the blurb from the
author's website:

Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, Ever can see auras, hear people's thoughts, and know a person's entire life story by touch. Going out of her way to avoid human contact and suppress her abilities has branded her as a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen.

Damen Auguste is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy. He's the only one who can silence the noise and random energy in her head—wielding a magic so intense, it's as though he can see straight into her soul. As Ever is drawn deeper into his enticing world of secrets and mystery, she's left with more questions than answers. She has no idea just who he really is—or what he is. The only thing she knows to be true is she's falling deeply and helplessly in love with him.

Read an excerpt HERE.

And now for my review. Please don't hate me!

Okay, immediately I started comparing this book to Twilight. Of course it's not like Twilight in every aspect but I couldn't help myself.

Originality:
The author was original, I think. The whole teen love, weird stuff going on, isn't too original but Ever had more as a character involved in the story that made it a bit more original to me.

Characters:
Ever's character was the best out of them all. Obviously she's the main character so we'd hope so. She's not just a regular teen. She's been through hell, losing her entire family in a horrible accident. Her friends are a bit odd. Haven and Miles are the other "odd" students of her school which I guess makes sense that she would be their friend but I didn't love them. Does that make sense? Damen's character is a whole other thing. I felt that I really didn't know him. He is very mystical and secretive and we come out knowing very little about him. And there are a few minor characters, one major character I can't describe or I'd give it all away, just suffice it to say that she's a bitch, entirely predictive and I could have done without her in this book.

Writing:
The writing was very today, very teeny, and very California. I didn't have many issues with it. I did, however, find it very predictive. There were only a few LOL episodes, one being my Tuesday Teaser from today.

Setting:
The author did great in this department but it could have been better. The setting is in Laguna, California, and it's proudly used as the setting. There's surfing, beaching, big houses, expensive clothes, etc... The author even goes fantasy with Summerland, an alternate reality for the Immortals.

Plot:
This is where it fell short for me. The entire plot was predictable, for me anyway. The only thing that had me wondering was what Damen really was. I shouldn't have been even thinking he was something else, it's clearly spelled out but I was hoping for something else, something more exciting. It didn't come.

Passion:
Lastly, passion. It's not a huge thing in this book. Of course there's the teen love story, which is essentially a by-product of the story. It's assumed and not really expressed in the story. There are a few scenes of kissing but I didn't feel the emotion. All because Damen felt like a stranger to me. Honestly, now that I'm thinking about it, the 8/10 is being generous. It was more like a 5 or 6.

In Closing:
So, did I like it? It was okay. It could have been better. Will I read the sequels? Sadly, probably not. I did read the preview at the end and the steaminess of the love story might get better but I'm betting it won't.

Now, I'm ready to hand this book over to someone else! I'm thinking a teen would probably enjoy this more than me, who's slightly older than teen aged.

In My Mailbox!

I got the following books in my mailbox this week!

Head on over to The Story Siren to see other In My Mailboxes!

ARCS:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_o7DThJc09bE/SZX0eN4hCXI/AAAAAAAABH4/NAVdl0qVEqA/s200/Erin+McCarthy+-+Hard+and+Fast.jpgI won this from Nalini Singh's blog. Thanks Nalini!
Hard and Fast by Erin McCarthy, releasing May 5th.

The sequel to Flat-Out Sexy, starring a bad boy race car driver hero who’s met his match—from a hot USA Today bestselling author.

Grad student Imogen Wilson realizes she’s hit on the perfect thesis for her sociology degree. If she follows the so-called “rules” on how to get a man, can she steer her way into the world and hearts of stock race car drivers, and establish their dating— and mating—patterns?

Although sexy and reckless racer Ty McCordle is the ideal test subject, Imogen knows that for the sake of science, she can’t give in to her growing attraction for him. Yet he’s the one who’s chasing after her, and Imogen realizes that she actually wants to be caught. A southern gentleman like Ty will satisfy all her curiosity—and make all the risks worthwhile…

http://www.bookpassage.com/upload/rapt_gallagher.gif
I also got another book from the same publisher, The Penguin Press, and I'm wondering why? It
seems like an interesting read for Non-Fiction but I'm not sure it's something that will consume me to read it. I'll probably read it here and there. But thanks Penguin Press!
Rapt: Attention and the Focused Life by Winifred Gallagher, releasing April 16th.

Winifred Gallagher revolutionizes our understanding of attention and the creation of the interested life

In
Rapt, acclaimed behavioral science writer Winifred Gallagher makes the radical argument that the quality of your life largely depends on what you choose to pay attention to and how you choose to do it. Gallagher grapples with provocative questions—Can we train our focus? What’s different about the way creative people pay attention? Why do we often zero in on the wrong factors when making big decisions, like where to move?—driving us to reconsider what we think we know about attention.

Gallagher looks beyond sound bites on our proliferating BlackBerries and the increased incidence of ADD in children to the discoveries of neuroscience and psychology and the wisdom of home truths, profoundly altering and expanding the contemporary conversation on attention and its power. Science’s major contribution to the study of attention has been the discovery that its basic mechanism is an either/or process of selection. That we focus may be a biological necessity— research now proves we can process only a little information at a time, or about 173 billion bits over an average life—but the good news is that we have much more control over our focus than we think, which gives us a remarkable yet underappreciated capacity to influence our experience. As suggested by the expression “pay attention,” this cognitive currency is a finite resource that we must learn to spend wisely. In
Rapt, Gallagher introduces us to a diverse cast of characters—artists and ranchers, birders and scientists—who have learned to do just that and whose stories are profound lessons in the art of living the interested life. No matter what your quotient of wealth, looks, brains, or fame, increasing your satisfaction means focusing more on what really interests you and less on what doesn’t. In asserting its groundbreaking thesis—the wise investment of your attention is the single most important thing you can do to improve your well-being—Rapt yields fresh insights into the nature of reality and what it means to be fully alive.

Lastly, I ordered Evermore (The Immortals) by Alyson Noel. I've read a lot of good reviews about it and decided to give it a go. So far so good. I'm about 15 pages or so into it.

Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever can see auras, hear people’s thoughts, and know a person’s life story by touch.   Going out of her way to shield herself from human contact to suppress her abilities has branded her as a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste…

Ever sees Damen and feels an instant recognition.  He is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy, and he holds many secrets.  Damen is able to make things appear and disappear, he always seems to know what she’s thinking—and he’s the only one who can silence the noise and the random energy in her head.  She doesn’t know who he really is—or what he is.  Damen equal parts light and darkness, and he belongs to an enchanted new world where no one ever dies.

  • Release Date: April 1, 2009
  • ISBN (hardcover): 978-0-7614-5536-3
  • ISBN (paperback): TBD
From her birth, Abisina has been an outcast-for the color of her eyes and skin, and for her lack of a father. Only her mother’s status as the village healer has kept her safe. But when a mythic leader arrives, Abisina’s life is ripped apart. She escapes alone to try to find the father and the home she has never known. In a world of extremes, from the deepest prejudice to the greatest bonds of duty and loyalty, Abisina must find her own way and decide where her true hope lies.

What do you think? I'm wondering how old Abisina is? 15 - 20? And what an unusual name.

While the battle continued to rage, Layel searched the clearing for the blue-haired warrioress but saw no sign of her. He was surprisingly disappointed, which was completely unacceptable. First desire, now a craving to see her?

Review & Contest: Eyes Like Stars (Theatre Illuminata, Part I) by Lisa Mantchev

Cover ArtEyes Like Stars: Theatre Illuminata Part I
Lisa Mantchev
July 7, 2009
Feiwel & Friends

I was given the chance to read and review the ARC of this lovely story by the author herself, Lisa Mantchev. I'd been stalking Lisa ever since the first time my eyes meet the cover of this endearing book.

Originality: 20!
Characters: 20!
Writing: 20!
Setting: 10!
Plot: 20!
Passion: 9!
Grade: 99/100!

Beatrice Shakespeare Smith lives at Center Stage of the Theatre Illuminata. Her best friends are fairies! She crushes on a pirate, Nate, and an air elemental named Ariel. She butts heads with the Stage Manager and constantly feeds the fire between the Property Manager and the Scenery Manager. And within it all she's an orphan with Cobalt blue hair. She controls the written word. If she writes it, it happens.

She is given the ultimate challenge. Sell out a show and receive a standing ovation or leave the Theatre forever. Is she able to get all the Managers and Players to work together to remake a play into something new? Will she survive an attack from a Sea Witch? And lastly, will she find out who her mother is?

This book was just too much fun to read! Beatrice's character seemed like an average teenage girl with a very supernatural setting that she lived in. The other characters of this book were from the works of Shakespeare's plays. I found that I knew just about all of the characters, so I didn't have any issues understanding what was going on. However, I wonder if other people reading this book find themselves confused because they don't know what play the character originates from. That would be the only negative thing I could find about this book.

The story was very original and complicated but it meshed well together. The setting and the plot were just outstanding. The creativity needed to write this book is unbelievable. Lisa did an amazing job putting it all together. And one of my favorite things about the written book is the typeface changes when Beatrice was writing the play lines. Amazingly well done.

I gave the Passion rating a 9/10, because I honestly felt the passion between Beatrice and both male leads, Ariel and Nate, more so with Nate. However, since Beatrice is only a teenager I feel the passion was definitely there and it was very tangible; therefore, my resulting rating of a 9/10.

Ultimately, this has got to be one of the funniest, creative books I have read in a very long time.

Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, Book 4) by Patricia Briggs

http://www.patriciabriggs.com/images/covers/bonecrossed_big.jpgMercy Thompson. Coyote shifter.

Originality: 20!
Characters: 19!
Writing: 19!
Plot: 18!
Setting: 8!
Passion: 4
Grade: 88/100!

This book was something else. It was kinda all over the place but it was very entertaining. Mercy is in danger from the vampires because of her previous run in with one that resulted in his death. Stefan plays a major character, as always, in this story. There are also ghosts and a raging lunatic vampire who figures out how to steal other supernatural beings powers and since Mercy can communicate with ghosts, he wants to suck her blood, literally.

Adam is finally allowed access to Mercy's heart, which is awesome because they both deserve some happiness. The love scenes could have been hotter but they'll do.

There are new fae characters that are introduced in this book too, which was very cool. I'm wondering if another Mercy Thompson book will come as the ending wasn't one that left me wanting more. Of course I'll always <3 Mercy!

After visiting Mrs. Briggs website, I can confirm that, yes, there will be more Mercy Thompson stories! Apparently, she has a contract for 7 Mercy Thompson novels, with the possibility of even more. Silver Borne is the working title for the 5th Mercy Thompson novel, expected February 2010!

More from Patricia Briggs:

cover imageHunting Ground (Alpha and Omega, Book 2)
This will be the second book in the Alpha and Omega series, featuring Anna and Charles. It's set on a slightly earlier time-table than the Mercy books. In this book Bran is going to make the werewolves publicly known. Unfortunately, there are some fairly persuasive beings who aren't real keen on that idea.

Pride (Werecats, Book 3) by Rachel Vincent

[pride.jpg]

Wow. I was so ready for this book and I knew it wouldn't disappoint until the end, where I knew it would just end with me wanting for more!

Characters: 20!

Setting: 10!

Plot: 19!

Originality: 20!

Writing: 20!

Passion: 5

Grade: 94/100!

Faythe is on trial for infecting and killing her ex boyfriend, Andrew. All kinds of stuff goes down during her trial, which takes forever because of Malone, another Alpha who's out to get Fathye's father's spot on the council. The council is being held in a log cabin resort in the mountains, which happens to be home to a few insane strays that do cause quite the ruckus.

Faythe doesn't disappoint with her very aggressive attitude especially when it involves Marc, her brothers, or the new character that we meet in this story. I hate giving away major details of a story so just know that the new development in this story is a MAJOR development. Of course you can read about the new character on the description on Amazon.com.

Faythe and Marc are still an item but not really. I think Faythe will continue to develop and may even accept their [Prey_front_cover.jpg]relationship soon, and by soon I hope in the next book, but we'll see!

I'm super excited that Prey will be out sooner than I thought! July 2009!

Went to the eye doctors today to get a new Rx for my eyes. I just had them checked about 6 months ago but they have deteriorated already! I blame Target but oh wells.

Here's a snippet of my new frames. I'm super excited about them. I usually stick to the basic brown with the hidden animal print on the interior but these were just too cute to pass, plus they looked good. They are a dark mauve, kind of see through that makes them appear a shade of pinkish/mauve. And they have adorable dragon flies on the sides.

Kindle for iPhone! Available Now!

imageHow cool is this!? You can now sync your iPhone with your Kindle! Yup, you can read the same book on two different devices and they will automatically sync and keep track of where you left off. The Kindle for iPhone app is now available for download via your iPhone.

I downloaded it today and tried it out. It's pretty cool. It's obviously not a very big reading screen but it works. So, if you don't really want to carry your Kindle everywhere you don't have to!

Of course you have to have an iPhone too.....

What do you think? Pretty cool? I think it's nifty. I'll fill you in on how often I end up using it.

This was a great book! Wraith scared me and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it or not. But I LOVED it! Wraith surprised me so much with this book.

Here's the blurb:

Forbidden Temptations…

Serena Kelley is an archaeologist and treasure hunter—and a woman with a secret. Since she was seven, she’s been the keeper of a powerful charm that grants her health and immortality . . . as long as she stays a virgin. But Serena isn’t all that innocent. And when a dangerously handsome stranger brings her to the brink of ecstasy, she wonders if she’s finally met the one man she cannot resist.

Fatal Desires…

Wraith is a Seminus demon with a death wish. But when an old enemy poisons him, he must find Serena and persuade her to give him the only known antidote in the universe—her charm. Yet, as she begins to surrender to his seductions, and Wraith senses the cure is within his grasp, he realizes a horrible truth: he’s falling for the woman whose life he must take in order to save his own.
